Position Description

The Criminal Division Operations Assistant Manager supports the Criminal Division Operations Manager in the administration and management of the Harris County Criminal District Courts which includes providing organizational, managerial and systems support to the 29 Harris County Criminal District Courts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Criminal Division Operations Manager, oversee daily operations of the Emergency Relief Dockets (ERD), Emergency Relief Trial Dockets (ERTD), and the Associate Judges (AJ) Program.
  • Create and implement written guidelines and protocols for the operations of the ERD, ERTD and AJ program.
  • Develop priorities regarding trial docket schedules and implements best practices.
  • Liaison with the District Courts regarding high impact cases for referrals to ERD/ERTD.
  • Evaluate and monitor program inefficiencies and recommendations process improvements.
  • Assign and coordinate Visiting Judges as needed.
  • Communicate to parties the jury panel and courtroom assignments for the following day.
  • Organizes and manages preparedness and response to disasters that may affect the ERTD and Associate Judges programs.
  • Perform such duties as directed by the Criminal Division Operations Manager and Deputy Court Administrator.
  • Assist in the management of the DCA staff assigned to Criminal Division operations, specifically:
  • The Associate Judges Court Coordinators & Court Reporters
  • ERD/ERTD Court Coordinators & Court Reporters
  • Effectively communicate with all staff and stakeholders to promote collaboration and efficacy.
  • Keep Operations Manager apprised of issues, trends, ideas for program enhancements and matters that effect operations to ensure access to information.
  • Monitor and assess staff training needs and requirements, and conduct training as needed.
  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of staff to maximize resources and proficiency.
  • Crosstrain staff to optimize productivity and ensure continuity of operations.
  • Serve as backup to Court Coordinators in their absence as needed.
  • Assist the Criminal Division Operations Manager with managing alternative Criminal Court operations during declared disasters or emergencies (COOP implementation).
  • Serve as backup in the absence of the Criminal Division Operations Manager.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an academically accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience in court operations in the Criminal Division.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exhibit strong leadership abilities.
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft products and software applications.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to follow directions, take constructive criticism and ask questions when in need of direction.
  • Willingness and ability to delegate tasks and responsibilities to subordinate staff.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with management, judges and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice processes and various systems within Harris County.
  • Ability to maintain the utmost confidentiality and discretion.

Preferences

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Criminal Justice or closely related field, preferred.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred.

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Regular Full-time
  • Monday - Friday | 8 hours per day
    • Hours may vary based on the business needs of the Felony District Court.


Salary:

  • $ 38.18 - $ 58.27 Hourly
  • Depends on Qualifications
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods
    • Plus, benefits

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • This job operates in a professional work environment at multiple locations within the downtown courthouse complex.
  • The position does not require heavy lifting or standing for lengthy periods of time.

Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports To Position: Criminal Division Operations Manager
  • Supervises Positions: Court Coordinators and Court Reporters for the Associate Judges and ERD/ERTD programs
